LOCAL AREAS -
GUILDFORD & GODALMING |
The
city of Guildford has for centuries played an important role in Surrey and the
south of England. Built on a hill and falling steeply to the river Wey its
prosperity is founded on the wool industry of the middle ages and the importance
of its location is indicated by its castle and the Roman road that forms the
main part of the high street to this day. The Guildhall clock which is
prominent in the high street has for centuries been a renowned feature of the
city. |
| Guildford
has successfully protected its heritage whilst moving with the times and it has
an abundance of facilities that should adequately provide for all the needs of
its residents. There is ample shopping of high quality including most of
the national chain stores. Education facilities are excellent and are
crowned by Guildford Grammar School, an independent school set up in 1509 and
granted a Royal Charter by Edward VI in 1552. Guildford Cathedral is a
prominent modern building built high on the downs and takes a lead in the
provision of matters spiritual and cultural. Churches and places of worship of
many denominations are to be found in the city. Sporting and social clubs,
theatre, music and activities of all kinds offer a wide variety of leisure pursuits
to all. |
| Located
with fast access to London and other parts of the country by both road and rail
Guildford and Godalming have long been favoured places to live. There is
an abundance of attractive housing both in the city and in the towns and
villages which border it. Godalming, a thriving Surrey town which has
always been closely linked with Guildford, its larger neighbour, offers a
friendly environment and all of the local facilities expected of a county town. |
| Travelers
for centuries have used the Pilgrims Way to transverse Guildford on their
journey to Canterbury Cathedral. For those now considering a move to the
area who do not know it, we recommend you stay in a local hotel or rent a
property for a period whilst searching out your preferred type of accommodation
- and what better way than to use the "Pilgrims" way!
